Progress! - Aria MacDonald

Progress!

Please would you take a moment to register to vote for the KIDS foundation to win a big cash donation.  This is the charity that supports our family so very well.  I feel bad because I have forgotten about it and May is nearly over SO PLEASE VOTE.  Will all the people that read Aria’s site we could totally win it for them.

Also Aria has a Facebook fan page you can join.

Today we arrived and Aria was visibly much, much better.  Her swelling has gone right down and her little tongue is back in her mouth.  Poor thing was so swollen that even her tongue was so big it couldn’t stay in her mouth.  No fun at all.

She is peeing heaps which is great.  During one hour this morning she had 145mls out!

Her vent settings and gases are good.

AND they are clamping her for 2 hours and off for 2.  Then tomorrow it will be clamping for 3 hours and off for 1 and Sunday will be clamping for 24 hours.  SO on Monday, Memorial Day in the US, we should be starting feeds.  Of course that is what we said last Friday when Aria tanked rather dramatically so we are holding our breath to see.

I asked for a little lesson on the plumbing of Aria’s kidneys today.  Apparently they have tried a new procedure that they have never done on anyone else before, that made be a bit nervous and I am glad we are only finding out about now.  It involved using a portion of the donors bladder and original plumbing.  The surgeon said that God made plumbing is better than man made- who would of guessed 😉 This method is better because it avoids the dreaded kidney reflux were pee flows back up into the kidneys and causes problems.

The only bad thing at the moment is that Aria is having some temp spikes to 39.5 (103 F) which is pretty hot.  Hopefully she isn’t brewing anything new (but blood cultures are negative so far.)

They may be some setbacks but we are so thankful that Aria’s recovery from this is not going to be months like was first suggested.

What good news to hear. I did not know her tongue was swelling but I have had experience with that from allergies and it is so scarry. Thank goodness she was not aware. How hard that must have been for you both to see. These dr’s must be fabulous and we know the parents are.
Memorial Day we will be remembering out best little soldier Aria and what a fighter she is.

Very interesting about the kidney transplant, it makes total sense really doesn’t it. Reflux is one thing you can do without.

Most encouraging to read today. Would be so precious if Aria is beginning to take food by her birthday! What a celebration – although it wont be cake of course! The Lord keep strengthening you day by day and all the medical team as well. Our love

What a fantastic update – Thank god for surgeons who try new things to make life better for Aria. I remember reading about that surgeon in Brisbane who pioneered live liver donation and who was ridiculed and nearly de registered by his peers – well live donors save so many liver transplant recipients these days. Anyway just love your update.

  22. Yvonne RRN says:

What an awesome update to read. Seems she is tiring of her ‘little rest’ & now biting at the bit to get going again.
With so much fluid of she will begin to look like the little Aria you know. Also with less fluid on board surely the clamping etc eill go well & she can show you all how she breath alittle on her own. Every baby step a move in the right direction..woo hoo!

Keep it up Aria sweetie you are doing sooooo well.

    So happy for you all
Blessings in abundance to you all

I tried to register the other day. However, there were a couple of required questions that I couldn’t answer, and it didn’t give me any other options. One was where I was from…all NZ locations, no USA, not even an “other” option. The second question had to do with where I heard about KIDS…again, nothing that applied, and no “other” option. Has anyone else had trouble with this?

  26. Judy Palmer says:

Great news on progress, thanking God that kidneys are doing their job.
I have been praying that Aria will be awake enough to know it’s her birthday on 3rd so looks good for that. Praying as always for you all
and thanking God for steps forward. Blessings, Judy.

  27. Prayers and pain - Aria MacDonald says:

[…]  The worst one was a contrast study of Aria’s bladder to see if the new procedure mentioned in this post had died and urine was leaking into her.  That meant there was damage to her bladder and there […]
